I start with CBT or DBT skill building, then I teach schema theory which helps identify where problems started and where triggers originate, then teach learning to see triggers before they happen and chose alternate responses. This leads very well into identifying limiting core beliefs and moves clients to EMDR processing if that is appropriate for the client.
I am very real and comfortable with myself and clients. I think they understand that I care and want to help them succeed. I use humor and analogy to help clients remember concepts that we discuss.
I use a lot of psycho-education. I believe they see the value from the first session as I am helping them understand what caused the problems, why its no ones fault, what they can do to anticipate triggering situations and respond differently based on their values. If the client and I find limiting core beliefs we move client toward EMDR processing.
