If a person has mental health issues, seeing a counselor or therapist is usually recommended. But what is the difference between the two? Are they the same? Here’s what you need to know: counselors and therapists are both mental health professionals that can help you with your emotional and mental well-being, but technically speaking they are not the same.

Besides the state laws, education, experience, and skills, both counselors and therapists have empathy, are good listeners, critical thinkers, and give positive feedback to help you live a productive life. Their scope of practice with their credentials are different. This is done to establish clarity when it comes to the standards of professional practice in the area of mental health.

Counselor vs. Therapist: Is A Counselor and Therapist the Same Thing?

In the state of Kentucky, the providers may differ with experience, the bachelor’s degree (degree in social work or degree in psychology), master’s degree, doctoral degree, skills, licensing requirements, and years of training.

Therapists and counselors are different, but there are similarities between the two mental health practitioners. Both mental health professionals aim to:

  • Help with understanding a person’s feelings, actions, behaviors, and thought processes
  • Address past and present issues to help improve a person’s life
  • Provide a safe, comfortable, healing, and therapeutic environment during sessions
  • Help set goals for self-improvement
  • Encourage people seeking help to discuss issues that cause them a mental health decline

You can only practice ‘Counseling’ in the State of Kentucky if you are a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) or a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC). Licensed Professional Clinical Associates (LPCA) and Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Associates (LCADA) are those who haven’t been fully licensed yet and they require a specific number of hours as well as pass the LPCC or LCADC process to be an independent practicing ‘counselor’. There are different kinds of Licensed Mental Health Counselors in Kentucky, and most of them have different specializations.

When considering starting counseling, it’s important to verify if the ‘counselor’ is legitimate. Don’t know how you can verify them? The Active License Directory of Kentucky can help you do it. All it takes is to type down their names and the type of license they’re claiming to have.

Therapists focus on the long-term treatment of emotional and mental issues. A therapist can help you gain insight into your past and how it is affecting your present issues. Therapists help you explore your core issues and help with long-term personal growth.

In Kentucky, the Board recognizes someone capable to provide ‘therapy’ if they’re a Licensed Therapist. Therapists use different approaches. One example of licensed therapists is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT). Associates or MFTAs are those who haven’t finished their time in the field and are yet to apply for an MFT license with autonomous practice authority.

Matt Grammer Founder of Kentucky Counseling Center

“I started KCC because I was frustrated with my father’s experience getting treatment for schizophrenia. When he finally found someone that could help, there was a 6 month waiting list and the doctor didn’t accept his insurance. Mental health care should be easy to find and affordable to receive.”

— Matt Grammer, LPCC-S Founder & CEO
