LPCA Supervision Requirements per LPC Board

Licensed professional clinical counselors (LPCCs) who wish to supervise LPCAs must complete a 15-hour board-approved supervision training or provide proof of a completed supervision course from a CACREP-accredited school. This training is mandatory for all LPCCs who want to continue providing supervision to LPCAs.

To qualify as a supervisor, the applicant must submit a LPCC-S Application with supporting documentation, which includes either a certificate from the 15-hour CEU course, two years of board-approved supervision agreements, or a copy of the syllabus as proof of completion of a supervision course. Additionally, the supervisor must be licensed by the board as a LPCC and meet certain professional and ethical standards.
Supervision should occur a minimum of three times per month, one hour per meeting for full-time practice, or one hour for every 30 hours of client contact for part-time practice. Supervision may include interactive, simultaneous video and audio media, provided they meet confidentiality requirement.

The supervisee is expected to gain broad experience and skill enhancement across a variety of developmental issues, dysfunctions, diagnoses, acuity levels, and population groups. Supervision focuses on areas like appropriate diagnosis, treatment plan development, ethical issues, and the use of professional self in the therapeutic process.

These requirements ensure that LPCAs receive appropriate guidance and supervision in their practice, helping them develop the necessary skills and knowledge for their professional growth. For detailed information and updates, it’s advisable to check the Kentucky Board of Licensed Professional Counselors’ website or contact them directly.

My Approach to Kentucky LPCA Supervision

As a licensed professional counselor supervisor (LPCC-S), my approach to LPCA (Licensed Professional Counselor Associate) supervision is grounded in several key principles: fostering growth, promoting ethical practice, and encouraging self-reflection. Supervision is not merely a regulatory requirement; it’s a pivotal journey in a counselor’s professional development. Here’s how I approach this vital role:

Focus on Ethical Practice in KY LPCA Supervision

Counseling is an ethical minefield. One of my primary roles is to guide LPCAs in navigating these complexities. We explore various scenarios, discuss ethical dilemmas, and reference the ACA Code of Ethics to ensure that their decision-making process is sound and in the best interest of their clients.

Encouraging Reflective Practice in KY LPCA Supervision

Reflective practice is at the heart of personal and professional growth. I encourage LPCAs to reflect on their sessions, their client interactions, and their own internal processes. This reflection fosters self-awareness and helps in identifying areas for growth.

While practical skills are important, integrating these skills with theoretical knowledge is crucial. I work with LPCAs to help them understand how theory informs practice and vice versa. This integration is essential for developing a strong professional identity.
